The theory of metamorphosis was developed by Goethe in the course of his morphological studies of plants and animals. As metamorphosis (from Greekμεταμόρφωσις metamórphōsis "metamorphosis, transformation, reshaping" from μετά metá "at, with," as prefix "re-" and μορφή morphḗ "shape" → μόρφωσις mórphōsis "shaping, design") in the sense of Goethe, one may thereby designate the transformation of form of a living being in the course of its individual (ontogenesis) and/or phylogenetic development (phylogenesis), even under changing external influences, according to internal laws.
