The Goetheanum is a monumental building designed by Rudolf Steiner in Dornach near Basel in Switzerland and today the seat of the General Anthroposophical Society and the School of Spiritual Science with its Sections.
After Steiner's death in 1925, Albert Steffen took over the presidency of the General Anthroposophical Society, which is not identical with the Anthroposophical Society founded by Rudolf Steiner, as the latter was dissolved on 8 February 1925 and the Goetheanum Building Society was transformed into the General Anthroposophical Society. Similarly, the School of Spiritual Science in its present form is no longer the one founded by Rudolf Steiner, as he did not appoint a successor to it (Lit.:GA 260, p. 51).
After the first Goetheanum, begun in 1913, was destroyed by fire on 31 December 1922, the foundation stone was laid in 1924 for a second Goetheanum, which was opened in 1928.
