Anthroposophic medicine, also anthroposophical medicine or more precisely anthroposophically extended medicine, sees itself as an integrative medicine that combines conventional and alternative healing methods in a meaningful way for the benefit of the patient. In anthroposophy, conventional orthodox medicine is understood as limited and material-technical, but at the same time as a well-founded natural scientific basis, which, however, is to be supplemented by certain spiritual-scientific insights. "It adds to the knowledge of the physical man, which alone can be gained by the natural scientific methods of the present day, that of the spiritual man." (Lit.:GA 27, p. 8)

Rudolf Steiner developed the theoretical-methodological foundations of anthroposophical medicine in 1920-1924 in numerous lectures for doctors and medical students (Volumes 312 -319 of the Collected Works) as well as in the book Grundlegendes zu einer Erweiterung der Heilkunst nach geisteswissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen (Fundamentals of Therapy - An Extension of the Art of Healing through Spiritual Knowledge), published in 1925 together with doctor Ita Wegman (1876-1943). Anthroposophically extended medicine is based on the principles of natural science as well as on anthroposophical spiritual science, as founded by Rudolf Steiner, in order to investigate physical, living, mental and spiritual phenomena. In this way, an extension of the medical art results, which seeks to understand diagnostically and handle therapeutically the relationship of body, soul and spirit of man in his individual situation in its relation to the substances and forces in nature and in the cosmos.

Anthroposophical medical teachings

According to anthroposophical medical teachings, it is important for human health to take into account the manifold interrelationships between the individual, his or her being and his or her environment. The treatment of a disease requires a holistic view of its causes. The choice of a certain therapy is therefore not only determined by the pure diagnosis, but also by the course of the disease, the life history, the social environment and the personality of the patient. Questions about the meaning and nature of being ill or dying, as well as the goal of healing, are also attempted to be clarified holistically. In order to recover, body, soul and spirit are to be brought back into harmonious interaction.

„Man is what he is through body, etheric body, soul (astral body) and I (spirit). He must be looked upon as healthy from these members; he must be perceived as sick in the disturbed equilibrium of these members; remedies must be found for his health which restore the disturbed equilibrium.“ (Lit.:GA 27, p. 18f)

Of central importance for the differentiation of anthroposophical medicine from conventional medicine is the additional orientation towards the soul-spiritual needs of the human being as well as the choice of other, partly own forms of therapy.

Medicine can only exist as a spiritual science

„Medicine can only exist if it is a spiritual science. For diseases come from a spiritual being which only uses the human body to find its account, which it does not find in the place assigned to it by the wise world leadership, against which it has rebelled, as I have shown you; a being which is actually an ahrimanic-mephistophelian being in human nature, which enters the human body as its dwelling-place before birth, and which only leaves this human body because it cannot bear death under its present circumstances, which also cannot conquer death. Illnesses come from the fact that this being works in the human being. And when remedies are used, the purpose is to give this being from the outer world what it otherwise seeks through the human being. If I add a remedy to the human body when this ahrimanic-mephistophelian being is at work, then I give it something else; I stroke this being, so to speak, I expiate it, so that it lets go of the human being and is satisfied with what I throw down its throat as a remedy.

But all these things are in the beginning. Medicine will become a spiritual science. And just as in ancient times medicine was known as a spiritual science, so it will be recognised as a spiritual science.“ (Lit.:GA 178, p. 74)
