„Shortly after the First World War, various young theology students asked Rudolf Steiner whether anthroposophy could not be used to help them renew their priestly and pastoral work. Rudolf Steiner responded to these questions with a first course for eighteen interested young people (GA 342). Even during the course, the participants asked for further lectures. Thus in the autumn of the same year (1921) Rudolf Steiner gave a comprehensive course of 29 lectures or discussion hours to a now considerably enlarged circle of over a hundred participants (GA 343). One year later (in September 1922), forty-five personalities from the circle of participants in this autumn course, under the direction of Pastor Dr. Friedrich Rittelmeyer, founded the "Christian Community" in connection with another of Rudolf Steiner's lecture courses (GA 344). Later Rudolf Steiner held two more courses for the priests' circle of this independent movement for religious renewal.

Rudolf Steiner often emphasised that it was not the task of the anthroposophical movement to found new religious communities, but he recognised the importance of the concern that had been brought to him and responded with his personal advice. The nature and extent of the help he gave will be seen from the volumes published here.“
