Sleep consciousness
The sleep consciousness that man has today in dreamless sleep was founded on the Old Sun. At that time man had only the physical body and etheric body, he did not yet have an astral body and an I. The sleep consciousness is brighter than the deep trance consciousness of the Old Saturn, but it is also less comprehensive than the sleep consciousness of the Old Sun. Sleep-consciousness is brighter than the deep trance consciousness of Old Saturn, but it is also less comprehensive than the latter, but it still reaches to the borders of our solar system. Today the plants have the sleep consciousness.
Deep sleep, in contrast to dream consciousness, is also called 'non-REM sleep, orthodox sleep or NREM sleep.
Even though what happens in sleep remains unconscious to our I, sleep consciousness is very conscious of itself and can also act from this consciousness. This can be seen, for example, in the phenomenon of sleepwalking (Lit.:GA 120, p. 128). In fact, the movements of our body are carried out much more skilfully out of this sleep consciousness than when the waking consciousness interferes; we are then active with truly somnambulistic certainty. During dreamless sleep the sentient soul is under the predominant influence of the Mars sphere. In dreams the Jupiter sphere works in the intellectual or mind soul. If the influence of the Saturn sphere on the consciousness soul predominates, the man becomes a sleepwalker (Lit.:GA 119, p. 64ff).
