Esotericism (from Greekἐσωτερικός esōterikós "inward", "belonging to the inner realm") is originally the name for a spiritual, philosophical or mystical doctrine which, in contrast to exotericism, was accessible only to a select group of people. Those who were deemed worthy of initiation into the mysteries had to pledge themselves to strict secrecy. Betrayal of the mysteries was usually punishable by death.
