On the Essence of Christianity

Über das Wesen des Christentums

Public lectures in various cities 1903-1910.

Contents

The public lectures in this volume belong to an eventful period in which Rudolf Steiner's teaching activity unfolded within the German Section of the Theosophical Society. From the beginning, Steiner focused on the significance of Christianity, whose esoteric side he gradually exposed. He contrasted the Hindu orientation of theosophy with an occidentally based esotericism, which did not have the character of a doctrinal building, but directly concerned questions of consciousness. This also allowed the development of religion to be presented in a completely different light, in that the wisdom core of the religions stood out. This contained some potential for conflict, which eventually led to the withdrawal from the Section and the founding of the Anthroposophical Society. The public lectures from this early period complement the Berlin Architectural House Lecture Series already published. They are an important source for the formation of Rudolf Steiner's Christology, which became a central theme in the following years.
