Goethe's works, edited by order of the Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxony, II. division, volumes 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. Compilation, textual constitution and editorial follow-up by Rudolf Steiner, edited by Renatus Ziegler and David Marc Hoffmann.

Contents

From 1884 to 1897 Rudolf Steiner edited the five-volume edition of Goethe's natural scientific writings in the "Deutsche National-Litteratur". Steiner's introductions to this edition are published collectively in volume 1 of the Complete Edition, his commentaries on Goethe's texts are documented in the facsimile edition GA 1a-e.

Less well known is Steiner's editorial work on the so-called Weimar or Sophien Edition of Goethe's works (1887-1919). Rudolf Steiner contributed to this historical-critical edition, which comprises a total of 146 volumes, from 1891 to 1896 as editor and editor of seven volumes of the II. section "Naturwissenschaftliche Schriften". In addition to the tables of contents for each volume, for which Steiner was responsible, these volumes contain editorial after-reports and detailed lists of readings in the appendix. For Rudolf Steiner this was an unloved philological back-breaking work, which left him little room to present Goethe's outstanding importance for a new knowledge of nature. He made do with making the development of Goethe's views clear through a certain sequence of texts. The present volume GA 1f edits for the first time in the complete edition the texts written by Rudolf Steiner within the Weimar edition, supplemented by further material.
