Translations and free transcriptions from the Old and New Testaments

Übersetzungen und freie Übertragungen aus dem Alten und Neuen Testament

Notes from notebooks, on memos, in books and letters, passages from lecture notes, ca. 1903 - 1923

Contents

Rudolf Steiner has repeatedly pointed out, and on various occasions explained in detail, that for an understanding of the Old and New Testament, connections with the history of mystery and consciousness are important. The usual translations do not know anything about this, so that Rudolf Steiner has translated certain passages himself or freely transcribed them in order to clarify the esoteric deep meaning. Some of it has been printed in previous volumes of the Complete Edition, much of it is still unpublished. This volume now brings together all available translations. Some of them are passages from lectures that have already been published, others are recordings from notes, letters and unedited lecture notes, and some are notes by Marie Steiner. All of Rudolf Steiner's handwritten texts are printed on a double page as facsimiles with a line-by-line transcription. Even those who know the original languages will find in these translations and free transcriptions of Rudolf Steiner a new access to the spirit from which they emerged. They show Rudolf Steiner's endeavour to reproduce first and foremost the esoteric content without making any concessions to good readability. But precisely because the origin of the texts from the supersensible can be experienced in this way, they are often also of extraordinary linguistic beauty.
