Sociology (from Latinsocius "companion") serves the empirical and theoretical scientific study of social life and behaviour. The term was first coined by Auguste Comte. In the German-speaking world, it was above all Ferdinand Tönnies, Georg Simmel and Max Weber who paved the way for sociology.
