Jainism (Sanskritजैन, m. Jaina "follower of Jina") is a religion native to India that originated around the 6th/5th century BC. A historically identifiable founder is Mahavira (c. 599-527 BC). The three basic universal ethical principles are ahimsa (non-violence towards all immanently animate forms of existence), aparigraha (independence from unnecessary possessions) and satya (truthfulness).
