Goethe und die Gegenwart

About 35 lectures in different cities, held in the years 1889-1912. With an index of all of Rudolf Steiner's Goethe lectures.

Contents

This volume fills the gaps in the already published lecture volumes on Goethe. The first lectures date back to the time when he was still active as an editor of Goethe's scientific writings, and the last ones date from the time when he spoke publicly about the esoteric aspects of Goethe's poetry. Thus, this edition allows us to understand the importance Goethe's worldview had in Steiner's foundation of thought. A sentence from his autobiography "Mein Lebensgang" underlines this: "I spent the last years of my first period of life justifying myself alternately to myself and to Goethe." What he gained from Goethe the naturalist then unfolded in the years to come in his reflections on Goethe's Faust, on his fairy tale, his poem "The Mysteries," and from many other points of view, which the lectures collected here document. In the appendix of the volume all Goethe lectures of Rudolf Steiner are listed. Among the printed lecture texts are also Rudolf Steiner's stenographic notebook entries on one of his earliest lectures: "Die Frau im Lichte der Goethe'schen Weltanschauung" held on December 29, 1889 in Hermannstadt.
