On the History of the Johannesbau Society and the Goetheanum Society 1911-1924

Zur Geschichte des Johannesbau-Vereins und des Goetheanum-Vereins 1911–1924

Lectures, addresses, speeches and documents October October 1911 to June 1924.

The Goetheanum has had an eventful history, beginning with the impulse to erect a theosophical central building in Munich, through the construction of the Goetheanum in Dornach, to its destruction and the building of the second Goetheanum. As clear and straightforward as the will was to create a visible place for anthroposophy, as arduous and eventful was the path to this end. Rudolf Steiner was tireless in his discussions with the members, took part in negotiations on legal questions and had to point out again and again what was actually meant by this building. This volume contains texts, letters, lectures, speeches and contributions to discussions by Rudolf Steiner during the period of the "Johannesbau Association" (from 1911) and the "Association of the Goetheanum, the School of Spiritual Science" (1918-1924). Also included is the first complete edition of the texts and speeches at the laying of the foundation stone for the Goetheanum building on the Dornach hill in September 1913. This provides a documentation of this eventful history of development, which expresses the tremendous willpower that had to be mustered to create space for anthroposophy.
